MISSION

CCA’s mission is to raise the profile of issues that impact the welfare of cetaceans everywhere, to contribute to the global movement which will eventually create sufficient critical mass to have the public demand action on measures which will dramatically improve cetacean wellbeing.  Some of the benefits we expect will accrue as a result of this are:

  • A complete and permanent end to whale and dolphin captivity, worldwide.  We will initially focus on Canada.
  • Legal protection against the hunting of whales and dolphins, worldwide.
  • The establishment of better and more effective enforcement measures against illegal hunting, worldwide.
  • Ensuring that the research we need to do is properly supported, so as to raise our understanding of cetacean needs, in order to much better anticipate when human activities might impact them or diminish their prospects for survival.
  • The start of a discourse which takes the best available science and makes an honest determination of whether dolphins – first and foremost – should be granted  personhood rights, then applies the principles established and extends them out as far as it makes sense to, possibly to other higher order mammals, including: other cetaceans, the great apes, and elephants.

PRINCIPLES

CCA operates according to the following principles:

  • It will have no purpose other than those stated in its mission, and any funds raised by donations, merchandise sales or otherwise will go into programs designed to improve the welfare of dolphins and whales.
  • It will act lawfully at all times, and will never advocate for any action which is not lawful, peaceful and respectful.
  • All discussions which take place on CCAs forums and social media will be respectful, inclusive, and committed to learning from one another.
  • It will not denigrate the patrons of dolphin shows, as it is our belief that such patronage is virtually always the result of a lack of awareness, and not indifference or antagonism towards the whales and dolphins being held in captivity.  Our criticism will be directed always at the few who profit from the suffering of others, and who are prepared to lie to the public in order to sustain their activities.
  • We will exercise the best judgment we can to use donors’ money in the manner most appropriate to maximizing the benefit to dolphins and whales for each dollar spent.
